Divide a 7-Digit Number by a 4-Digit Number

To divide a seven-digit number by a four-digit number (for example 1365420 2276), follow these steps:

  • Place the divisor (2276) before the division bracket and place the dividend (1365420) under it.
    •
      2276)1365420

  • Examine the first four digits of the dividend (1365). The number 1365 is smaller than 2276 so it can't be divided by 2276 to produce a whole number. Next take the first five digits of the dividend (13654) and determine how many 2276's it contains. The number 13654 contains five 2276's (2276*5=11380) but not 6 (2276*6=13656). Place the 5 above the division bracket directly above the 4.
    •          5
      2276)1365420

  • Multiply the 5 by 2276 and place the result (11380) below the 13654 of the dividend.
    •          5
      2276)1365420
           11380

  • Draw a line under the 11380 and subtract it from 13654 (13654-11380 = 2274).
    •          5
      2276)1365420
           11380
            2274

  • Bring down the 2 from the 1365420 and place it to the right of the 4 in 2274.
    •          5
      2276)1365420
           11380
            22742

  • Divide 22742 by 2276 and place that answer above the division bracket to the right of the 5.
    •          59
      2276)1365420
           11380
            22742

  • Multiply the 9 of the quotient by the divisor (2276) to get 20484 and place this below the 22742. Draw a line under the 20484 and subtract 20484 from 22742 to get an answer of 2258. Bring down the 0 from the 1365420 and place it to the right of the 8 in 2258.
    •          59
      2276)1365420
           11380
            22742
            20484
             22580

  • Divide 22580 by 2276 and place that answer above the division bracket to the right of the 9. Bring down the 0 from the 1365420 and place it to the right of the 8.
    •          599
      2276)1365420
           11380
            22742
            20484
             22580

  • Multiply the 9 of the quotient by the divisor (2276) to get 20484 and place this below the 22580. Draw a line under the 20484 and subtract 20484 from 22580 to get an answer of 2096. The number 2096 is called the "remainder" and indicates that there were 2096 left over.
    •          599 R2096
      2276)1365420
           11380
            22742
            20484
             22580
             20484
